The Art of Automatic
The Heritage of Automatic Watches
Automatic watches are the most unique and intricate kind of mechanical timepieces. All mechanical watches are driven by a spring (or mainspring), which powers the movement of gears and hands. With the spring’s loss of energy over time, users had to regularly wind it up to make sure the watch would not stop. Automatic (or self-winding) watches eliminate the need for the user to wind the watch, with a mechanism that winds the mainspring automatically. The weights in the watch’s mechanisms spin while the watch is worn and the user’s wrist is moving. Simply walking will keep an Automatic perpetually wound.
The idea of a self-winding watch originated in Europe at the end of the 18th century. Great inventors and designers such as Abraham-Louis Perrelet or Hubert Sarton are regarded as the fathers of Automatic watches. Their heritage and the history of Automatic timepieces lie at the heart of Grayton’s identity and values.
Grayton Automatic - How does it work?
The watch gathers and stores energy through the movements so it is therefore able to keep running if you take it off at night. Once the stored energy is used up, the watch will stop. Just a simple movement of the watch or winding of the crown (to reset the time and date) and the process starts all over again. Once the watch is in motion, it has an autonomy of 41 hours, during which it keeps going, even if you are not moving or not wearing the watch for many hours.
Why should you get an Automatic watch?
Choosing a Grayton Automatic Watch is a conscious return to a mindset that our grandparents knew well: that investing in solid, built-to-last goods was the right thing to do. Craftsmanship and aesthetics combine to create the allure of an automatic watch. Wearing an Automatic is a statement of elegance with a respect for tradition.
Having no embedded battery, Automatic watches are environmentally friendly and demonstrate a responsible attitude about sustainability. You have the power to think about the future and choose products free from planned obsolescence. The Automatic watch you buy today is a heritage piece that will last for a lifetime and for generations yet to come.

Incoming Quality Control
All pieces and components of Grayton watches are thoroughly and carefully controlled by our team of experts. When we receive components from our trusted and competent suppliers, we make sure that every piece matches our high standards of quality. Only then do we proceed to production.
Functional Quality Testing
Once the watches are assembled in our facility, we test every one of them, making sure they function properly. Are the crown and hands moving smoothly? Does the buckle on the strap close properly? These are the kind of questions that our quality control team ask themselves every day.
The Technology of testing
Our Quality Control department is up to date with the latest technology and techniques to test the safety, reliability, and accuracy of our watches. Every part of the watch goes under a series of elaborate tests to identify possible flaws and make sure it can withstand extreme conditions. Among other tests, we check the flexibility of the straps, the water resistance of the cases, the accuracy of the timekeeping and more.
Stainless steel case
Our stainless steel cases with a hint of silver or IP rose gold give each of our watches a unique character while maintaining our signature design. One of the finest features is our transparent backside design that allows you to see the intricate inside movements of the watch!
Dial and hands
Dials and hands are the core parts of any watch and we pay extra attention to even the smallest details of these components. With super luminous colored hands, a Grayton automatic watch will tell you the time no matter how dark it is.
And stainless steel bracelets
The design of our bracelets is as important as that of our dials. At Grayton, we work hard to customize and satisfy different tastes. We chose genuine leather and stainless steel as materials for our watch straps and bracelets.
